Common Names: African Spear, Cylindrical Snake Plant, Spear Sansevieria, Spear Orchid, Skyline Spear Sansevieria

Description: The African Spear is an evergreen perennial succulent which forms clumps of tall thick spear-like stems with very sharp tips. This succulent from the mother-in-law’s tongue family are very striking and visually appealing with their smooth green stems and silvery mottled or stripey markings.

Like most mother-in-law’s tongues, this succulent can be kept bare rooted in a vase of water and rocks for stability. They will typically not flower easily when kept this way, but are extremely low or even no maintenance house plants that work exceptionally well as an air purifier.

Flowers: Mature plants will produce tall flower stalks with clusters of green-white tubular flowers with slight pink tones. These flowers have a very pleasant fragrance and have been likened to orchid flowers.

Size: The African Spear will grow in clumps which can become very wide spread if the space is available. Individual stalks can grow up to 2.1m tall.

Growing Season: Summer, but look great all year round.

Origin: Tropics of Angola

Positioning: This extremely hardy plant can adapt and thrive in most positions, from part sun to indoors. The African Spear can be very happy outdoors in the garden, but is also known as a very good house or office plant.

Care Instructions: If this plant is kept outdoors in the weather, this plant will require no maintenance except the occasional watering during droughts. To encourage flowering and speedy growth in any position, keep in a well drained position and allow the soil to dry out completely between deep watering. If kept indoors in a vase with rocks, top up water whenever it has dried up or running low.
