Arizona Snow Cap

Arizona Snow Cap (Mammillaria vetula subsp. gracilis)

Aesthetic Description

Tiny, fuzzy stems cluster like snow-dusted marshmallows and can fill a shallow pot with whimsical charm. Occasional pink flowers make it even more adorable.

Scientific Description

Scientific Name: Mammillaria vetula subsp. gracilis
Common Name: Arizona Snow Cap
Plant Type: Subspecies
Family: Cactaceae
A miniature cactus forming dense clusters of short, cylindrical stems. Each stem is covered in white radial spines and may produce small pink blooms around the crown.

General Botanical Information

Native to central Mexico, this subspecies of Mammillaria vetula thrives in rocky outcrops and dry environments. It spreads by producing offsets and forms compact mounds. Its white spines help reflect intense sunlight and protect it from temperature extremes. The plant’s small size makes it ideal for indoor pots and dish gardens.

Care Description

Place in full sun or a bright windowsill. Water only when the soil is bone dry and never let it sit in water. Handle gently — the spines may be soft-looking, but they still poke!
