Euphorbia pseudocactus, colloquially known as the Candelabra Spurge, is a visually striking succulent native to South Africa. This plant exhibits a cactus-like appearance with segmented columnar stems densely covered in spines. The stems often grow in clusters, lending the plant a bushy appearance. Its greenish-gray hue contrasts starkly with the dark spines, making it a favourite among succulent collectors.
The natural habitat of the Candelabra Spurge is the arid regions of South Africa. As such, it’s well-suited for drought-like conditions, requiring minimal water and thriving in well-draining soil. It enjoys full sun to partial shade, which helps in maintaining its vibrant colour.
A noteworthy feature of the plant is its milky sap. This sap, like in many Euphorbias, is toxic and can cause skin irritation. Caution is advised when handling the plant to avoid contact with this sap.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, the African Milk Barrel doesn’t have notable common uses. However, its unique appearance and easy-care requirements make it a popular choice among succulent enthusiasts.
