Clumpy Mistletoe (Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides)

  • Other Known Names: Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides
  • Genus: Rhipsalis
  • Species: mesembryanthemoides

Aesthetic Description

Clumpy Mistletoe looks like a forest floor that took to the sky. It forms dense mounds of branching stems covered in tiny, cylindrical segments that resemble fuzzy moss or miniature pipe cleaners. Unlike most trailing Rhipsalis, this one grows outward and upward before tumbling gently over. Its delicate, almost frosted texture makes it a quiet standout — less of a spotlight hog, more of a subtle statement piece.

Scientific Description

Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides is a compact epiphytic cactus species from the Cactaceae family, native to southeastern Brazil. It grows in clumping, upright-to-arching mounds with fine, jointed stems densely packed with short cylindrical segments. Tiny white flowers emerge at the tips, followed by small, translucent berries. The species name references its similarity in form to the genus Mesembryanthemum.

General Botanical Information

Best suited to small hanging pots or pedestal planters where its soft form can be appreciated up close. This species prefers a humid, sheltered environment with bright, filtered light and free-draining substrate. Spineless and pet-safe, it is easy to propagate and low maintenance once established.

Care Description

  • Light: Bright indirect light

  • Watering: Moderate; allow surface to dry before watering again

  • Soil: Loose, airy epiphytic blend with bark and perlite

  • Feeding: Monthly in spring and summer with a diluted fertiliser

  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when clumps become dense
