Crassula Burgundy (Crassula platyphylla)
- Other Known Names: Burgundy Crassula, Red-Edge Crassula
- Genus: Crassula
- Species: platyphylla
Aesthetic Description
Crassula Burgundy is the succulent equivalent of a good glass of wine — smooth, subtle, and gets better in the sun. Its rounded, paddle-like leaves grow in tight stacks along short stems, shifting from fresh green to deep burgundy at the tips when exposed to light or cold. In stress, the entire plant flushes to a soft, velvety maroon. It’s perfect in bowls or tight arrangements, where its rich tones provide contrast and quiet drama.
Scientific Description
Crassula platyphylla is a perennial succulent native to South Africa and part of the Crassulaceae family. It grows low to the ground in mounding clumps, with broad, oval leaves arranged in opposite pairs. Small white to pinkish flowers may appear at the stem tips in late spring or summer.
General Botanical Information
Often used for edging or contrast in mixed succulent designs, this plant handles dry spells well and responds beautifully to sunlight shifts. It propagates easily by leaf or stem cuttings and makes an excellent filler in both shallow and standard containers.
