Devil’s Backbone (Euphorbia tithymaloides variegata)
- Other Known Names: Redbird Cactus, Zigzag Plant, Slipper Flower
- Genus: Euphorbia
- Species: tithymaloides
Aesthetic Description
Devil’s Backbone earns its name with dramatic flair — upright stems twist in a zigzag pattern, stacked with fleshy, pointed leaves striped in green and cream. The stem alone looks like botanical lightning. When in bloom, it can produce tiny, slipper-shaped red flowers that add a surreal, almost cartoonish quality. This plant doesn’t just grow — it dances.
Scientific Description
Euphorbia tithymaloides variegata is a variegated form of a tropical succulent shrub in the Euphorbiaceae family, native to Central America and the Caribbean. It grows with alternately arranged, thick, fleshy leaves on wavy stems that branch irregularly. The plant produces small, red, cyathium-type flowers at the tips of stems. Like many Euphorbias, it contains a milky sap that can be irritating to skin and eyes.

This plant prefers warmth and filtered sun and is ideal for container gardening or as a standout houseplant. It can grow over a metre tall if allowed, and can be pruned easily to maintain shape. Tolerates drought once established, but dislikes cold.
