Large Flowering Rhipsalis (Rhipsalis grandiflora)

  • Other Known Names: Large-Flowered Mistletoe Cactus, Mistletoe Cactus ‘Megalantha’, Forest Coral Cactus
  • Genus: Rhipsalis
  • Species: neves-armondii

Aesthetic Description

Soft, trailing, and completely spine-free, Rhipsalis neves-armondii forma megalantha is the succulent version of forest mist. Its slender, green pencil-like stems tumble in every direction, twisting gently as they grow. What makes this form stand out? The flowers — large (for a Rhipsalis), white, and slightly waxy, they open like forest stars along the stems. The overall effect is both wild and graceful — a rainforest waterfall made of succulents and snowflakes.

Scientific Description

Rhipsalis neves-armondii forma megalantha is an epiphytic cactus from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Belonging to the Cactaceae family, it produces long, branching cylindrical stems and relatively large, actinomorphic flowers. This botanical form is specifically recognized for its unusually large blossoms, which emerge from mature stem joints during the warm season.

General Botanical Information

Ideal for hanging baskets or mounted arrangements, this species thrives in humid, shaded conditions. It enjoys regular but moderate watering and benefits from excellent drainage and airflow. As an epiphyte, it naturally grows among tree canopies and tolerates lower light than many succulents. Completely pet-safe and soft to the touch.

Care Description

  • Light: Bright, indirect light or soft morning sun

  • Watering: Keep slightly moist during growing season; reduce in cooler months

  • Soil: Orchid bark or chunky epiphytic blend with perlite

  • Feeding: Monthly with balanced fertiliser during spring/summer

  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years, or when stems crowd the pot
