Little Turtle Eggs (Sedum hernandezii)
- Other Known Names: Sedum hernandezii, Jellybean Stonecrop
- Genus: Sedum
- Species: hernandezii
Aesthetic Description
Little Turtle Eggs looks like it belongs in a candy jar or an alien terrarium. Its succulent leaves are round, glassy, and etched with fine lines that resemble turtle shell patterns — soft greens with a translucent glow. They grow in tightly packed stacks along short stems, giving the whole plant a pebble-like texture. In bloom, bright yellow flowers pop like confetti from the middle of this leafy pile. It’s strange, satisfying, and guaranteed to be a talking point.
Scientific Description
Sedum hernandezii is a slow-growing, low-mounding succulent native to Mexico. Part of the Crassulaceae family, it produces nearly spherical leaves with translucent epidermal windows and textured markings. Flowers are yellow and appear at the center of the rosettes during the cooler months.
General Botanical Information
Best grown in small, shallow containers to admire its curious details up close. It thrives in bright light but prefers cooler temperatures and regular airflow. It’s less tolerant of overwatering than most Sedums and benefits from a gritty soil mix with excellent drainage.

Watering: Allow soil to dry thoroughly; avoid water sitting on leaves
Soil: Very free-draining mix (pumice-rich)
Feeding: Light feeding during spring
Repotting: Rare; prefers staying rootbound
