Monkey Tail Cactus

Cleistocactus winteri subsp. colademonis, commonly known as the Monkey Tail Cactus, is a striking, trailing cactus characterized by its long, cylindrical stems densely covered in soft, white, hair-like spines. These “tails” can grow up to 8 feet in length, and their furry texture gives them a unique, fuzzy appearance reminiscent of a monkey’s tail. As the stems grow, they cascade, making this cactus perfect for hanging baskets or tall planters.

Native to Bolivia, the Monkey Tail Cactus thrives in well-draining soil and prefers bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade. It is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, with an increase in water during the active growing season and reduced watering in winter. In spring and summer, it may produce vibrant red or orange, tubular flowers along the length of its stems, which attract pollinators and add a striking contrast to its spines.

Its unusual, trailing growth and minimal care requirements make the Monkey Tail Cactus a popular choice among indoor gardeners and succulent enthusiasts. For best results, avoid overwatering and provide ample light to maintain its vigorous, cascading growth.
