Pineapple (Euphorbia cv. Cocklebur)
- Other Known Names: Euphorbia ‘Cocklebur’, Mini Pineapple Plant
- Genus: Euphorbia
- Species: cv. Cocklebur
Aesthetic Description
Pineapple earns its nickname from its chunky, ridged body and stubby leaves that shoot up like a tropical crown. The stem is heavily textured with geometric ridges and tiny spines, creating the illusion of a pineapple that traded sweetness for strength. Despite its playful shape, this plant is all business when it comes to survival — drought-tolerant, compact, and full of character. It’s weird, wonderful, and always gets a second glance.
Scientific Description
Euphorbia cv. Cocklebur is a cultivated succulent hybrid in the Euphorbiaceae family. It forms a short, barrel-shaped main stem with prominent vertical ridges and small spine-like structures. New growth often emerges as a central cluster of narrow leaves, mimicking a pineapple crown. The plant may produce small, inconspicuous cyathia (Euphorbia flowers) under ideal conditions. As with all Euphorbias, it contains toxic white latex sap.
General Botanical Information
Excellent for small containers, collectors, or quirky feature pots. Its slow growth and compact form make it ideal for indoor shelves or succulent displays. Needs minimal water and lots of airflow. Handle with care due to spines and toxic sap. Fun, hardy, and low-maintenance.
Care Description
Light: Full sun to bright indirect
Watering: Low; allow soil to dry thoroughly
Soil: Sandy, sharply draining mix
Feeding: Light fertiliser during growing season
Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound
NOTE: Euphorbia’s are for ornamental purposes only. The milky sap can be toxic and can cause adverse reactions if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes. Do not ingest. Euphorbias do not typically require pruning or maintenance, but take care when handling.
