Red Bubbles (Huernia confusa)

Genus: Huernia
Species: confusa

Aesthetic Description

Huernia confusa — aka “Red Bubbles” — is like a succulent that’s been zapped with alien DNA. Its thick, angular stems are covered in little bumps that look like green bubble wrap, and it sprawls confidently across pots like it owns the shelf. But the real magic happens when it blooms. Out pop star-shaped, deep red flowers, often speckled or velvety, with textures so bizarre you’d swear they were made of silicone. This plant isn’t just eye-catching — it’s a full-on curiosity cabinet in a pot.

Scientific Description

Huernia confusa is a low-growing, stem-succulent species in the Apocynaceae family, native to eastern Africa. It forms clumps of toothed, 4- to 5-angled stems with soft spikes and a creeping habit. Its unique flowers are dark red to maroon, five-lobed, and emerge close to the base of mature stems. Though small in size, they are visually striking and produced in warm conditions.

General Botanical Information

A classic member of the “Carrion Flower” group, Huernia species are known for their odd, sometimes fragrant blooms — though H. confusa is among the less aromatic (good news for indoor growers). It’s easy to propagate from stem cuttings and thrives in shallow pots or trailing arrangements. Loves heat, and hates soggy soil.
