This is a very cool, attractive succulent with beautifully patterned cylindrical stems having a distinctive pencil-like appearance. The leafless stems are usually dark purplish-green with a pinkish tinge, and feature silvery-green striations and purple arrowhead markings. It blooms with large red or orange flowers.

This plant is very drought tolerant once established and will only need regular minimal watering, allowing soil to dry out between watering. Water sparingly in winter. Place in a position of partial to full sun with at least three hours of direct sun each day. A well-drained regular potting soil with added grit will help this plant thrive.
