There are over 2000 species of Euphorbia around the world, and this variety is one of the impressive tree-forming spurges native to peninsular India and Sri Lanka. While its strength and rigidity makes it a fantastic addition to any sunny courtyard or desert garden, it grows well in containers and can also be treated as a houseplant. Its common name “Spiral Cactus” arises thanks to its distinctively unusual spirally-twisted spiny stems, designed to form an impenetrable barrier against predators for nesting birds.
A unique and easy to grow accent plant, it makes a perfect beginner’s plant and will give a rich feel to your veranda or patio. Plant in a bright, sunny position and give a well-drained, sandy cactus mix. Low maintenance—simply water when dry.
NOTE: Euphorbia’s are for ornamental purposes only. The milky sap can be toxic and can cause adverse reactions if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes. Do not ingest. Euphorbias do not typically require pruning or maintenance, but take care when handling.
