Splish Splash (Euphorbia tithymaloides)
- Other Known Names: Redbird Cactus, Zigzag Plant, Slipper Flower
- Genus: Euphorbia
- Species: tithymaloides
Aesthetic Description
Slipper-flower is a plant that leans into its eccentric side. Its upright, crinkled stems grow in a tight zigzag pattern, topped with narrow green leaves arranged in crisp symmetry. But it’s the blooms that earn this plant its name: vivid red, slipper-shaped flowers appear at the tips, adding a burst of colour to its sculptural form. It brings character and cheer to any collection with very little effort.
Scientific Description
Euphorbia tithymaloides is a shrubby succulent in the Euphorbiaceae family, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. It grows with alternately arranged, lance-shaped leaves along angular stems. The species produces red cyathia (specialized Euphorbia flowers) that resemble tiny slippers or birds in flight. Like many Euphorbias, it contains toxic latex sap.
