The Variegated String of Buttons, also known as Baby’s Necklace, Necklace Vine, Pagoda Plant, Stacked Crassula, or Sekelblaarplakkie, is a charming succulent that can add a touch of whimsy to any indoor or outdoor space. Its botanical name is Crassula perfoliata variegata, and it is native to hot and dry climates in South Africa.
One of the Variegated String of Buttons’ most striking features is its mottled creamy white margins and variegation markings on the leaves, which create an eye-catching contrast of colors. Additionally, small white star-shaped flowers grow along the stems, adding to its visual appeal. This succulent can typically grow up to 45cm in height and spread up to a meter wide, with mature plants producing offsets from the base.
To thrive, the Variegated String of Buttons requires well-drained soil and should never be left to sit in water, as it is susceptible to root rot and fungal diseases. We recommend mixing sand with a good quality potting mix to replicate its native soil and allowing the plant to dry out between deep watering.
Overall, the Variegated String of Buttons is a delightful and low-maintenance plant that can bring a unique touch of charm and whimsy to any plant collection.
